There are many different water sources in our Atlanta homes, and each can cause water damage. We at Serenity Restoration know that being aware of the most common causes of water damage can help you, the homeowner, take correct precautionary measures against water damage before the problem occurs.
Bursting or Leaking Pipes
Burst or leaking pipes are the most common cause of water damage in homes. Backed up drains and clogged pipes cause pressure to build up in the pipe, which then causes it to burst or leak. Any time you notice slow drainage, or a clog, you should get it fixed immediately to avoid pressure build up. Regularly check pipes and look for signs of deterioration. Corroded and rusty pipes are more prone to leaks. If you notice old or rusty pipes, get them replaced. You should also check pipes regularly for any leaks and get them addressed as soon as they are found.
Malfunctioning Appliances
Hoses that supply household appliances with water will begin to deteriorate, rust, and crack over time. Weakened hoses pose a serious threat for water damage, and should be replaced every few years to avoid malfunction. Washing machines, refrigerators, water heaters, and dishwashers are all susceptible to deterioration; so routine inspection and maintenance should be performed on all appliances to keep them in good condition. Hot water heaters can also cause serious flooding because of the amount of water they hold, and their design to constantly remain full. Make sure that you inspect your water heater regularly, and keep it maintained and in good condition.
Plumbing Problems
Most of the plumbing in our homes are located in places we cannot see (behind walls, under floors, etc), so it can be hard to detect water damage from plumbing problems until they have become severe. Some signs you should look for to ensure there is no hidden water damage from unseen plumbing are: musty smells and odors, pooling water or puddles in normally dry areas, mold growth, discoloration of walls, ceilings, or floors, changes to floors, walls, or ceilings like warping, bubbling, or cracking, dark or wet spots, and unusually high water bills. If you notice any of these signs, odds are there is water damage from plumbing problems. Performing periodic inspections under your sinks and around your home can help aide in the detection of water damage from plumbing. Clogged and backed up drains can also lead to water damage. Slow drainage is often an early sign of a clog, so be sure to get the source checked at the first sign of drain backup.
Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning Units
HVACs are another common cause of water damage. Air conditioners in particular can cause some serious water damage when regular servicing and proper maintenance is not performed. Moisture can build up in these units, and as it cools it creates a perfect environment for mold growth. If you notice your HVAC system is not performing properly, be sure to get it checked to avoid any potential water damage.
